Seeing God’s Hand in the World Around Us
As Spring is slowly making its way here in the Northern Hemisphere, I have been reminded of how nature points us to God.
Romans 1:20 says, “for since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so they are without excuse.”
The context of Romans 1 is about mankind knowing full well what the “natural” way of things are but turning away from it to fulfill their own desires. But the truth stands as a rock for us to lean on - we learn about God when we observe the things that He has made.
They don’t teach us everything - because we still need to know about the way to salvation. BUT they teach us WHO is the One capable of providing that access to salvation instead of destruction.
Psalm 136
Now take a look at Psalm 136.
If you aren’t feeling confident about God’s hand in your life, personally, read Psalm 136. I encourage you to read it out loud.
The power of repetition of ONE truth drives home the knowledge of all the things God has done.
The Psalmist wanted to get across ONE truth -
“For His lovingkindness is everlasting”
Over and over the writer connects this truth to things we take for granted, forget, or don’t think about enough.
Try writing the Psalm out.
Think about the sections - God’s wonders, God’s Power over the enemies of Israel, and God’s Provision
What does it mean to you to know that God overthrew the Egyptians? That He overthrew the Egyptians to allow Israel to leave slavery? Does it remind you that this was a fulfillment of prophecy and promise?
Over 400 years after Jacob’s family found salvation in Egypt by God’s provision (Joseph), God led them out again as another salvation. All of this to bring them to Canaan, which is another promise and prophecy that was fulfilled many generations after they were first made.
Build on what the Psalm says further by doing a threading study - Find as many of the events mentioned as you can, where they happened in the story of God’s Salvation. Note those references in the margins next to each verse.
Visually, this reminds you that each of those events really happened. Add the references to the prophecies and promises, and you again have a visual of a page FULL of God’s promises being KEPT.
That knowledge is what Peter talks about in 2 Peter 1:2-4.
It is what Hebrews 10 - 12:2 shows us moved believers to endure for something greater, “a better country, that is, a heavenly one”. It is knowledge that motivate you too.
The Psalm is a Thanksgiving to God the Father Who is Faithful.
Why is He faithful? Because “His lovingkindness is everlasting”.
Give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
To Him who alone does great wonders,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who made the heavens with skill,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who spread out the earth above the waters,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who made the great lights,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
The sun to rule by day,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
To Him who struck the Egyptians through their firstborn,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
Then brought Israel out from their midst,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
With a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
To Him who divided the ]Red Sea in two,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the ]Red Sea,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who struck great kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
And killed mighty kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
Sihon, king of the Amorites,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
And Og, king of Bashan,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
And gave their land as an inheritance,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
Even an inheritance to Israel His servant,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Who remembered us in our low estate,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
And has snatched us from our adversaries,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
Who gives food to all flesh,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
